“His Grace is Sufficient”
Years ago (90’s) I heard Charlotte Church sing “Amazing Grace”. I told my kids you can play that at my funeral. I loved the song. She grew up and her voice got even better and she sang it again in 2001 with the National Orchestra of Wales. It is beautiful.
Amazing grace - how sweet the sound- That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.
The Lord has promised good to me; His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be. As long as life endures.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares. I have already come. His grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.
This beloved hymn reminds us of Nephi’s anguished cry: “O wretched man that I am!” Then, remembering the Lord’s mercy, Nephi added, “My soul will rejoice in thee, my God” (2 Nephi 4:17, 30). The text of this hymn was included in an early hymnbook of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1841.
About this hymn
Many of you will remember the story from Brother Brad Wilcox talk at byu, “His Grace is sufficient'“, The story of the girl whose mother is paying for her piano lesson. The mother doesn’t ask for payment back. That isn’t what she wants. She wants her daughter to become proficient in playing the piano and asks only that she practice, practice - practice! In the same way Christ has provided for us the Atonement. He is asking us to Follow Him, that he might help us become what Heavenly Father desires us to be, like Him.
The talk is worth a reread! This is a “cliffsnotes” version! (click here for Brad Wilcox’ talk)
